Chapter 18

Ben waited at the hospital until Black Hawk’s hand had been put in ice, the wound had been cleansed, bandaged, and a shot of antivenin administered. The bite was light, they said. No venom had reached his heart.

“I just hate it when that happens,” Black Hawk complained as Ben helped him climb back into the truck.

“Getting bit?”

“Yeah, I really hate snakes.”

Ben stood on the brakes. “But you're a herpetologist!”

“I know.” Black Hawk sighed. “Ain't it a mess?”

As Ben began driving again, Black Hawk explained, “Being a First Nations male, who is terrified of snakes, is embarrassing. I first studied snakes to get over the fear, and by the time I'd gotten over the fear, I was too fascinated by them to leave them alone.”

“But you just said you hated them.”

“I never said it had to make sense.” He adjusted the bandage on his hand. “I was pretty good back there with Moriah, though, wasn't I?”

“You were great.”

“I hear you and she are going to be restoring the lighthouse.”

“News gets around fast. How did you find out?”

“Would you believe drums?”

“I don't think so.”

“How about smoke signals.”

“Nope.”

“Would you believe Katherine called me on my phone and told me?”

“Yes. That I would believe.”

“Is it true? Are you going to restore it?”

“Looks like it. Jack began putting in the road today, so we can start getting supplies to it.”

“This will probably come as a surprise to you, but Moriah’s grandfather was my second cousin, as well as my blood brother.”

“I don’t think anything you could say right now would surprise me, Black Hawk. But that blood brother stuff, do you guys still do that?”

“With the possibility of AIDS and Hepatitis C and STD’s? Are you kidding? No way. But back when we were kids and the world felt pure, it still seemed like a good idea. It was hard on me when he died. I miss my old friend badly some days.”

“I can imagine.” Ben slowed down as he crossed the bridge onto Manitoulin. “By the way, where am I taking you?”

“Back to Katherine’s lodge. I'll drop you off. I feel fine now. I can drive myself home from there.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, I'm sure. I'm the snakebite expert, remember? Besides I have to take those snakes over to Lonely Island. We still got eight rattlers in the back of this truck.”

“Why don't you take them home and milk them or whatever you do.”

“I've already got more than enough. These islands are crawling with Massasaugas.”

“Then why are they on the endangered species list?”

“I don’t know. Makes the government feel important, I guess.” Black Hawk fingered the bandage on his hand again. “McCain?”

“Yes.”

“Are you going to restore the lighthouse completely?”

“As close as possible.”

“Even the tower?”

“Especially the tower. Moriah wants to put a big telescope there and a beacon.”

“I thought maybe she was thinking about putting the light back in.”

“Someone stole the lens a long time ago.”

“I know. I remember. But if she had a true Fresnel lens, do you think she would put it back
